Arthur M. Shaver was plantation manager for W.M. Smith & Sons from 1908 — cotton and general farm, not the Angus books. He was on the place before there was a single black cow on it.
His father, Thomas Jasper Shaver, ran one of the county’s largest blacksmith shops for W.M. and T.B. Smith until a train killed him at the Smithdale crossing in 1926. Winnie Bob Shaver, who married J.H. Smith, is of that same Shaver world.
