The Story

This Isn't
a Cookbook.

It's the story of a man who grew up cooking whole-hog in Birdeye, Arkansas — a town so small you blink and miss it — and somehow ended up winning the world championship twice. On two different continents.

Jim Quessenberry didn't start with a recipe book. He started with a pit, a fire, and a stubborn streak that wouldn't quit. He built the Arkansas Trav'ler competition team from the ground up, competed at Memphis in May before it was famous, and took his sauce to Ireland before most people knew BBQ traveled.

Quess: The Arkansas Trav'ler is his son's attempt to get all of it down — the stories, the technique, the philosophy, the characters — before the smoke clears for good.

About the Author

Michael Quessenberry

Michael Quessenberry is Jim's younger son and the author of Quess: The Arkansas Trav'ler. He grew up on the competition circuit — in family footage from 1989, a five-year-old Michael is already learning the craft at the pit.

The book documents Jim's journey from the backyard pits of Birdeye, Arkansas to two World Championships in Ireland — written by someone who was there for part of it and spent years reconstructing the rest from recordings, notebooks, and memory.

His brother Lee is publishing partner and brand manager — the digital presses, pre-order, and story architecture on this site. Their mother, Donna, taught kindergarten and helped market the original sauce line in the 1990s. The household always mixed classroom discipline with championship fire. This book is that inheritance in hard covers and PDF.

Questions

When does the book ship?
We're targeting a late 2026 launch. Your pre-order locks in today's price. Print editions ship at launch. The digital edition (PDF + ePub) is included with every purchase and delivers to your inbox on launch day.
Is the digital edition really included with every purchase?
Yes. Softcover, hardcover, and signed hardcover all include a free digital edition (PDF + ePub) on launch day. The ebook-only tier is for readers who only want the digital files.
How does the pre-order work?
Pick your format, add it to cart, and check out securely through Snipcart. You'll get an order confirmation right away. Digital files go out on launch day; print copies ship when the book launches.
Is this a cookbook?
Not primarily. The book is a memoir and oral history — the story of Jim's life on the competition circuit. There are BBQ principles woven throughout, but it's not a recipe collection.
Will the signed copies sell out?
Yes. We're doing a very limited numbered run of signed hardcovers. Once they're gone, they're gone. Pre-order early — and you'll still get the digital edition on launch day.
Do you ship internationally?
For now, we're prioritizing US print orders. Digital editions deliver worldwide by email. If you're outside the US and need print shipping, email info@jqbbq.com and we'll figure it out case by case.
